What does the butterfly represent? Is the butterfly lucky? Are butterflies a symbol of good luck?
Some people believe that when a butterfly lands on you it is a sign of good luck to come. Others say that it is bringing a message from the spirit world. But what really is the spiritual meaning of a butterfly?
The ancient Greeks believed that butterflies were the souls of the departed. In Christianity too, the butterfly is associated with the soul – initially trapped within the body but then freed in a resurrection into a new life as it transforms itself from a caterpillar into a spectacular arthropod.
In Japanese culture too, butterflies are most closely associated with this symbolism of metamorphosis and transformation. In Native American Indian culture as well, butterflies represent change: But many tribes consider the butterfly to be lucky.
So, although sometimes thought of as a messenger from the spirit world, the butterfly is primarily a symbol of change. And metaphorically speaking, we could say that the things that served us well when we were young ‘caterpillars’ are no longer helpful and we need to develop and move on. We can’t live the way we used to. So, symbolically, we are asked to accept the changes in our lives . . just as the butterfly does. This can be particularly true with teenagers moving into adulthood.
In this sense, the butterfly can also remind us to make changes when the opportunity arises. Change and transformation are inevitable for all of us at one time or another in our lives, and this unwavering acceptance of metamorphosis by the butterfly can be symbolic of faith – allowing the wind to carry us forward to our new goals and dreams. For this reason / meaning, many people wear a piece of butterfly jewellery (necklace or charm): A butterfly charm necklace is the perfect gift for a friend or loved-one’s new beginning – their new start in life – a symbol of their new life, and of letting go of old cycles and of finding a true inner self. The butterfly calls on us to expand our awareness, spread our wings and move forward with joy – and find our own place in life.
So, in this sense it can be considered lucky and suitable as a gift for someone special who is about to embark on new ventures – wishing them luck.
Apart from butterfly jewellery (particularly necklaces), many people have butterfly tattoos. Interestingly, the most popular tattoo worn by women from all walks of life and from all over the world is the butterfly. Whether combined with a flower or a vine (typically as a butterfly armband), or as a thin tribal tattoo, butterfly tattoos usually acknowledge the woman as a free spirit and of her blossoming from a girl into a woman.
