What do roosters symbolise? Is a rooster good luck? What is the spiritual meaning of a rooster?

A rooster (or cockerel as it is otherwise known) is a male chicken (as opposed to the hen), and it has great significance in Portugal and special meaning in China where it is one of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. We occasionally have some Lucky Rooster  ceramics in our SHOP  online.

What do Roosters symbolise?

To the Chinese, the Rooster symbolises honesty, confidence and fortitude. People born in the Years of the Rooster are said to be smart and earnest. The next Year of the Rooster is 2029. Does this mean that these people will have to wait until then to attract good luck? No. Roosters can be lucky outside of their years, but 2029 is said to bring them prosperity and wealth too.

It is the Portuguese (and to some extent their Spanish neighbours on the Iberian Peninsular) that consider the rooster lucky all the time. In particular, the Rooster of Barcelos (whose legend tells the story of a dead rooster’s miraculous intervention in proving the innocence of a man who had been falsely accused and sentenced to death) is a major good luck symbol – many a house has a statue of one.

The Rooster is so engrained in the culture of Portugal, it has become a national symbol and it is a common souvenir. So a symbolic cockerel / rooster figurine makes a lovely good luck gift for a housewarming present or a gift for a new home – to wish good fortune.
